Out-of-Area Registration
Some people choose to register with a GP practice that is not close to where they live. This is called an out-of-area registration.
Information for patientsWe want to make sure you understand how this works and when it may not be the best option for your care. Please read the information below before you register as an out-of-area patient.
What is an out-of-area registration?
You can register with a GP practice outside your local area. If you do this, the practice may not offer:
- Home visits
- Urgent care at your home address
- Some community services near where you live
For urgent help near your home, you may be advised to contact NHS 111 or local urgent care services instead.
Who is out-of-area registration suitable for?
Out-of-area registration may work well if you:
- Are generally well and rarely need urgent GP appointments
- Can easily travel to the practice for appointments
- Do not rely on home visits
- Do not need regular support from local community services
When out-of-area registration may not be appropriate
We may advise you to register with a GP closer to home if:
1. You need regular face-to-face care
For example, if you have:
- Frailty or mobility problems
- Long-term conditions needing frequent reviews
- Need for regular home visits
2. You rely on local community services
Such as:
- District nursing
- Community mental health services
- Rehabilitation or therapy teams
- Social care teams
3. It may be unsafe or hard to reach us quickly
For example, if:
- You would struggle to travel to the practice in an urgent situation
- You may need urgent, in-person care near your home
- Your health has changed and you now need closer monitoring
4. Your situation changes over time
If your health needs increase after you register, we may review your registration to make sure you can still get safe and timely care.
What happens if I need urgent care at home?
If you are registered as an out-of-area patient, the practice may not be able to send a GP to your home.
For urgent care near your home, you may be advised to contact:
- NHS 111
- Your local urgent treatment centre or walk-in service
- 999 in a medical emergency
What if I move house?
If you move outside the practice area:
- You may be able to stay registered as an out-of-area patient, or
- We may advise you to register with a GP closer to your new home
This will depend on your care needs and whether it remains safe and practical for us to look after you from a distance.
Why might the practice say no to an out-of-area request?
GP practices do not have to accept out-of-area patients. We may not accept an application if:
- We believe it would not be safe for your health needs
- You have high care needs that require a local GP and community team
- We have reached the safe limit of out-of-area patients we can manage
These decisions are made to ensure that all our patients receive safe, high-quality care.
I’m not sure what to do – can I talk to someone?
If you are thinking about registering from outside our area and are not sure if it is right for you, please contact the practice.
Our team can talk through your health needs and help you decide whether out-of-area registration is the safest option.
Please speak to our reception team or submit an online request. Let us know if you live outside our practice area so we can give you the right information.

Temporary Patients
If you are ill while away from home or if you are not registered with a doctor you can receive emergency treatment from a local GP practice for 14 days. After 14 days you will need to register as a temporary or permanent patient.
You can be registered as a temporary patient for up to three months. This will allow you to be on the local practice list and still remain a patient of your permanent GP. After three months you will have to re-register as a temporary patient or permanently register with that practice. You cannot register as a temporary patient at a practice in the town or area where you are already registered.
To register as a temporary patient simply contact us.

These fact sheets explain the UK health services (NHS) for people who are new to the country and seeking asylum. They cover topics like the role of GPs, how they manage access to healthcare, and how to register and use emergency services. The information is written in clear language and has been tested with different groups to ensure it’s easy to understand.
